Andréhn-Schiptjenko at Art Basel Hong Kong
March 23-25, 2017

Andréhn-Schiptjenko proudly announces their fifth participation at Art Basel Hong Kong. We look forward to welcoming you in booth 1B20 where we will be showing works by José León Cerrillo (MX), Lena Johansson (SE) and Xavier Veilhan (FR). Katarina Löfström’s videowork ”Downhill” is included in the fair’s film programme, curated by Li Zhenhua.

José León Cerrillo (born 1976) lives and works in Mexico City. Interested in language – as system of meaning with inherent flaws and implied power structures – Cerrillo plays with graphic ideologies, linguistic systems, constructivism, geometric abstraction and modernist iconography to explore the possibilities of genuine abstraction through a wide range of media, installations and performance. In Hong Kong we will present two sculptures made of glass, steel, concrete and plaster, as well as a two-dimensional rubber work on the floor.

His solo-exhibition Interlude 22 was held at LIGA in Mexico City last year. Cerrillo’s work has been shown in exhibitions like the 2016 Gwangju Biennale in South Korea and the 2016 Okayama Art Summit in Japan, the 2015 New Museum Triennial in New York, curated by Lauren Cornell and Ryan Trecartin and Registro 04 at MARCO in Monterrey, Mexico in 2015.

Lena Johansson (born 1975) lives and works in Sweden, has been widely acclaimed for her small, intense oil paintings. With a prior background in architecture, Lena Johansson is interested in the relationship between figurative painting and space. Her portraits are derived from commercial lifestyle media and she combines them with paintings of interiors. When installed together they form new and uncanny stories with a dark undercurrent, based on the relationship between the characters and the interiors.

Xavier Veilhan (born 1963), lives and works in Paris. His work is multi-faceted, encompassing sculpture, installation, painting and photography, as well as hybrids of all of these. He is also engaged in performance work and filmmaking. Veilhan plays with the notions of the generic, of the industrially produced object and of universal representation, creating objects at once ambivalent and stark. In Hong Kong we will be showing a large group of stabiles and mobiles – which have a very clear hand-made quality.

His work is to be found in most important public and private collections worldwide. He has also made several permanent public works in different locations across the world, as well as creating temporary site-specific interventions within Architectones since 2012. Veilhan will represent France in the 57th Venice Biennale with a largescale immersive installation project titled Studio Venezia (curated by Lionel Bovier and Christian Marclay).
