ANDRÉHN-SCHIPTJENKO at Art Basel, June 15-18, 2017
We are delighted to welcome you to this year’s edition of Art Basel and hope to see you in Hall 2.1, Booth M19 where we will be presenting new works by gallery artists Nandipha Mntambo, Xavier Veilhan and Gunnel Wåhlstrand.
Nandipha Mntambo (born 1982, Swaziland)
Working with sculpture, painting, video and photography, Mntambo has become well-known for her exploration of intimate relationships; the challenges of the dichotomies of love and hate, attraction and repulsion, remain at the core of her œuvre. Her paintings on canvas may be understood as a simplification of the human form but are also studies of colour and expanse and are in many ways related to her sculptures as layered and translucent colours are used to create depth.
A solo-exhibition of Mntambo’s work will inaugurate the much-anticipated Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town in September 2017 and her work has recently been on view in Afrique Capitales at La Villette, Paris.
Xavier Veilhan’s (born 1963, France)
Arguably one of France’s most internationally renowned artists, Veilhan’s œuvre encompasses sculpture, installation, painting, photography, performance work and filmmaking as well as hybrids of all of these. He plays with the notions of the generic, of the industrially produced object and of universal representation, creating objects at once ambivalent and stark. Rays is the first non-site-specific version of a series of architectural interventions developed over the past years. Veilhan’s interest for architecture and installation is long-standing. In 2009 he invested the entire Chateau de Versailles castle and gardens and he has made numerous permanent public works around the world.
He is currently representing France at the 57th Venice Biennale and has transformed the entire pavilion into the critically acclaimed Studio Venezia, an immersive and collaborative installation that will have a continuously changing programme for the whole duration of the Biennale.
Gunnel Wåhlstrand (born 1974, Sweden)
Exclusively working with what can be described as a re-development of private photographs, Wåhlstrand masters the technique of ink-wash to perfection. Her body of motives, images from her family photo album as well as more recently her own photographs, makes the artist’s depiction a both deeply personal and universal process, one that is painstakingly slow and physically demanding, Wåhlstrand literally working on hands and knees, immersing herself in an image in order to see it, a way for the artist to physically and psychologically approach a personal history.
Wåhlstrand’s work is currently the subject of a mid-career retrospective produced by Magasin III Stockholm where it is exhibited until June 11. It opens at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam on June 23 (through September 24) and is accompanied by a publication.
