ANDRÉHN-SCHIPTJENKO at Material Art Fair, February 8-11, 2018

Andréhn-Schiptjenko is delighted to announce their participation in the 5th edition of Material Art Fair, taking place at the Frontón México in Mexico City. We look forward to welcoming you in our booth nr A01 where we will be presenting works by gallery artists José León Cerrillo, Jacob Dahlgren and Matts Leiderstam.

José León Cerrillo’s (b. 1976, Mexico) œuvre is multidisciplinary, using language as a starting point and drawing from graphic ideologies, linguistic systems, constructivism, geometric abstraction and modernist iconography as a point of departure. He explores the possibilities of genuine abstraction through a wide
range of media, from printed posters to sculpture and performance, often combining all of these into compelling installations. At Material we will be presenting Echoes, where several motifs introduced in an earlier exhibition project by the artist, are repeated to create new work. The thermoforms are imprints, to be read literally as such, as footprints in the sand or reliefs from a past action. Some signs mutate from flat to relief, some mimic posters for a past exhibition. Memory as the work itself.

Jacob Dahlgren’s (b. 1970, Sweden) work is concerned with a dialogue between the authoritative singularity of pure formal abstraction and its position within a variable, complex and social shared culture. Dahlgren’s repetitious collections of ubiquitous and ordinary objects, often domestic, industrially manufactured; stand in their gestalt form as proxy for High Modernist Abstract Painting and for all of the ideological territory that Twentieth Century Art Theory
has staked out for it. The contributing objects, however, signify a collective and human aspect of society, each representing an individual choice, to be used or consumed in a unique way by its consumer. We will be exhibiting new works from the series Units of Measurements and Model for understanding the World.

Matts Leiderstam (b. 1956, Sweden) uses the personal viewing experience of historical paintings as point of departure for his work, often resulting in complex series of oeuvres that span a long period of time and that are equally informed by the processes of the artist as that of the art-historian. We will be exhibiting his most recent body of work – where the artist’s emphasis on the importance of ways of seeing has been intertwined with abstract art’s care for articulation. Lost pendants is a series of abstract panels, simultaneously painting and object and, in keeping with most of Leiderstam’s work, while speaking to vision in general and the gaze in particular, they are best experienced in three-dimensional space.
