It is with great pleasure that Andréhn-Schiptjenko announces the first European solo-exhibition of South African artist Nandipha Mntambo at the gallery. Mntambo’s signature material is the cowhide. Across cultures and belief-systems a relationship to the cow is universal, however different this relationship may be. Mntambo focus is on the female body, often using her own, and she creates “empty” yet very corporeal sculptures where the shape of the female body collides with the lumpy and coarse cowhide and disrupt conventional perceptions of attraction and repulsion. A key concept in this most recent body of work is that of the doppelganger or the sensation of having a glimpse of oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where it could not possibly be a reflection. This recognition of the dark double is an extension of Mntambo’s earlier photographic works Narcissus and The Rape of Europa in which the artist herself enacted both protagonists, whilst maintaining a clear acknowledgement of the self. The battle of the male and female energy continues the be a thread that is explored within Mntambo’s process and this body of work is informed by the artist’s interest in the mythology of Zeus and his relationship and marriage to Hera – wife and sister and his equal in power. The recognition of the self in the other as well as the challenge that it presents are at the center of the fluctuations and conflicts of their relationship. At the core of the artist’s œuvre are the binaries of love/hate, attraction/repulsion and safety/danger, and Mntambo’s work simultaneously embraces, explores, destabilizes and challenges these dichotomies. In addition to this group of sculptures, we are pleased to present a series of works on paper with cow-hair, referencing the sculptures in material whilst distinctively painterly. Nandipha Mntambo was born 1982 in Swaziland and currently lives and works in Johannesburg. She received her MFA from Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town in 2007 and was awarded the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art (South Africa) in 2011. She has been included in the 17th Biennale of Sydney in 2010, DAK’ART 2010, 9th Biennal of Contemporary Art (Dakar, Senegal) in 2010, and Bamako Encounters, African Photography Biennial (Bamako, Mali) in 2009. Major international group exhibitions include venues such as Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki, Finland, 2011), the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art (Atlanta, USA, 2009) and The San Diego Museum of Art (San Diego, USA, 2008). Solo-exhibitions include Oliewenhuis Art Museum (Bloemfontein, South Africa) in 2012, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) in 2011, and the North-West University Art Gallery (Potchefstroom, South Africa) in 2011. She is currently showing in on Female Power: Matriarchy, Spirituality and Utopia at the Arnhem Museum in the Netherlands.

Please join us in booth nr 3C35 where we will be delighted to present works by the following artists:

Julie Roberts, (b, UK) Roberts is widely exhibited internationally and was first introduced to an international audience at the 1993 Venice Biennale. Most recently her work has been seen in a large solo show at the Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh. Roberts’ fascination for 19th and 20th century European history serves as continuing inspiration for her. Her analytical approach and emphasis on conditions for human life have created a consistent œuvre of highly charged canvases. At Art Basel Hong Kong we will present works from her most recent series focusing on children – often those from orphanages and needy families in Britain at the time of WWII and thereafter.

Cajsa von Zeipel (b 1983, SE), graduated from the Royal Art Academy in Stockholm 2010. She has earned critical acclaim and public attention through her monumental sculptures and her work has already been exhibited in a number of major Swedish institutions. von Zeipel’s sculptures carry references to both fashion and teen culture. Her primary motifs have previously exclusively consisted of teenage girls with their familiar attributes; ponytails, platform shoes and a provocative attitude. Von Zeipel’s works have an aesthetic that is simultaneously appealing and scary and her figures seamlessly move from the attractive to the repulsive, grotesque and studied. Traditional power structures are broken down and the hierarchies between object and viewer are dislocated.

Tony Matelli, (b 1971, US), has become known for his hyper realistic sculptures often depicting characters and things just barely getting by; things nearly dead, hopelessly lost or totally unwanted. These sculptures serve as metaphors for our own social malaise and our general struggle for survival. During recent years he has moved away from his earlier depictions of humans and animals towards examining signs of human presence. Matelli’s work has recently been shown in a major mid-career retrospective; Tony Matelli: A Human Echo at ARoS, Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Denmark and Bergen Kunstmuseum, Norway. At Art Basel Hong Kong we will show a mirror painting and a group of Weeds – an ongoing project, made in bronze to look exactly like the real thing, an intruder that is as persistent as it is unwanted.

Xavier Veilhan, (b 1963, F), arguably one of his generation’s most internationally renowned artists, has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the U.S. and Asia. Veilhan’s work encompasses sculpture, installation, painting, photography, performance and film-making as well as hybrids of all of these. He plays with the notions of the generic, of the industrially produced object and of universal representation, creating objects at once ambivalent and stark. Veilhan’s work has recently been seen in solo-exhibitions at La Conservera, Murcia, Spain in and at Phillips Collection, Washington. The continuous project Architectones, wherein the artist does interventions in landmark buildings, has recently been taking place at The Sheats-Goldstein Residence in Beverly Hills and will in June be at Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse in Marseille. A major permanent public sculpture, Jean-Marc, was recently installed in New York

Andréhn-Schiptjenko proudly present the gallery’s first exhibition by Siri Derkert (1888-1973) . It is with great pleasure we thus start our collaboration with the estate of Siri Derkert, in preparation for a more extensive solo show.

The opening takes place on Thursday, May 30, 5 pm-7 pm.

The exhibition, presented in our projectroom, consists of a group of reliefs from the 1960’s made with bent band iron. The objects are expressive portraits of known and unknown people and resemble three-dimensional drawings, where the metal make up the drawn line. They are relatively unknown in the ouevre of Siri Derkert and many of them are shown for the first time at Andréhn-Schiptjenko. Originally, the band iron was pressed into concrete to form lines and shapes. Gradually, Siri Derkert started to bend the band iron into separate reliefs.

Ristningar i Naturbetong (Engravings in Concrete) in the subway station Östermalmstorg in Stockholm and Sverigeväggen (The Sweden Wall) on the wall of the Sweden House by Kungsträdgården in Stockholm are perhaps Siri Derkert’s most famous works. She represented Sweden in the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1962 and had an extensive retrospective exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam the same year. Her works have been shown in two retrospectives at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1960 and 2011).

The SCAD Museum of Art presents an ambitious solo exhibition of works by acclaimed conceptual photographer and 2012 MacArthur Fellow Uta Barth. ”To draw with light” features three related sequences of atmospheric, minimalist images, which have never been shown together. Selected singular photographs from the series ”Compositions of Light on White” recall the geometric abstractions of Mondrian with formalist grids of light and architectural detail. Also on view are diptychs and triptychs from the series ”… and to draw a bright white line with light” that trace a ribbon of sunlight through the texture of a curtain as captured in a single day. Collectively with her most recent series ”Deep Blue Day,” these works underscore Barth’s brilliant use of light as her medium and visual perception as her subject, and in so doing, heighten our awareness and forever alter our way of seeing.

Blotta storleken gör dem larger than life, både bokstavligt och bildligt.
