Public commission by Yngvild Saeter for Normoria opera house, Kristiansund, Norway: Public commission

7 November 2025
Yngvild Saeter recently unveiled a new public commission for Normoria opera house in  Kristiansund, Norway.

The sculpture, Njord, is a tribute to the main character in Kristiansund's history: the almighty cod. The work is named after the Norse god of the sea and fishing.

From the Stone Age Fosna people to modern times, cod has built and sustained the city, and it is hard to imagine a more worthy creature to adorn Nordmøre's new cultural centre, the Normoria opera house.

The sculpture consists of the neurocranium of a cod that has been 3D scanned and printed. The work has been processed with clay, fibreglass, epoxy, plaster, marble dust and horsehair. The work is incredibly intricate, with paper-thin, transparent sections and complex skeletal formations. The skull is coloured with soft shades of blue, purple and pink. The work is finished with a thin layer of holographic pigment.

The result is a sacred figure, a totem above the city.
