Since 2011, Xavier Veilhan has developed Rays, an ongoing series conceived as a tribute to Jesús Rafael Soto and Fred Sandback. Addressing questions of representation and display—central concerns within Veilhan’s practice—the works take the form of immersive, optical environments that engage scale, light, shadow, and ephemeral architecture. Rays has been presented in numerous institutional and public contexts, including Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse in Marseille, the Sheats Goldstein Residence in Los Angeles, Hatfield House (UK), La Conservera in Murcia, and Sainte-Bernadette-du-Banlay in Nevers, designed by architect Claude Parent.
In addition to extensive photographic documentation of successive Rays installations, this artist’s book includes preliminary sketches and Veilhan’s iconographic research, drawing on scientific imagery, architectural references, and art historical figures. An excerpt from Edwin A. Abbott’s 1884 scientific classic Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions further illuminates the conceptual framework underlying the Rays series.
