Carin Ellberg - Mother of Pearl and the others : Stockholm

Andréhn-Schiptjenko has the pleasure to announce a new solo-exhibition by Carin Ellberg, the artist’s seventh at the gallery. 

To a great extent Ellberg’s art has its point of departure in a personal idiosyncratic imagery and her œuvre is characterised by a unique exploration not only of forms and ideas but also of very disparate materials and substances such as coffee, silicon, tights and cloths. Her process is a stream of ideas and thoughts in a constant and on-going transformation. The process manifests itself in paintings, drawings, collages, and sculptures where the obvious and the unconscious smoothly float in and out of each other, and where meanings and ideas can be guessed at but remain continuously elusive.

The exhibition will premiere a large group of sculptures made in materials that are new to Ellberg’s practice, round iron and glass. Mother of Pearl is the title of the centrepiece of the exhibition. Both in form and content the sculptures bear resemblance to her work on paper, where the iron is shaped with the lightness of the drawing, the glass is the three-dimensional collage and where a narrative can be imagined but not clarified. The exhibition also shows a small number of drawings and collages.

Carin Ellberg is currently present with a solo-exhibition at Gävle Konstcentrum, and will have a solo-exhibition at Kristianstads Konsthall June 11 – September 18. During her career she has had a great quantity of solo-exhibitions and her work is represented in several public as well as private collections. She has also numerous times been commissioned to create site-specific art within the public space, as well as received the Moderna Museets Stora Skulpturpris in 2005.
