Gunnel Wåhlstrand (b. 1974) is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, known for her large-scale ink wash paintings based on photographs from her private family archive. Her working process is slow and exacting, allowing no room for correction.
When Wåhlstrand began translating these photographs into paintings, it was essential that the works exceed her own physical scale. By enlarging the images, nothing is concealed; instead, the past is rendered fully visible and tangible, enabling an immersive engagement with personal and unfamiliar histories.
As Wåhlstrand has noted:
“I started working with ink because the technique resembles a slow developing process, and the irreversible quality of ink reflects the idea that everything in life has consequences—you cannot undo your actions.”
This first monograph on Wåhlstrand’s work surveys paintings produced between 2002 and 2012. The publication includes texts by curators Jasper Sharp (Vienna) and Ben Street (London), with a foreword by David Neuman, curator and director of Magasin III Museum & Foundation for Contemporary Art.
